Reflections on AY2013-2014 Semester 1

The workload for this semester was very light having taken only EC modules. In fact, I didn't do much practice but I was pretty consistent in my revision. So yes, that's all you have to do to score for higher-level modules and this leaves you with an additional 3-5 hours of free time everyday.

I think taking a break from my second major and focusing on EC3101 and EC3102 for this semester was the right decision. In fact, before the start of the semester, I kept pondering over whether I should clear both EC3101 and EC3102 together or just EC3102 first. Apparently, the lecturer for EC3101 will be a different one in Semester 2 and that might have increased my chances of getting a higher grade should he decide to focus less on Asymmetric Information. However, I am glad to have cleared both the core modules all at once as my level of interest in micro makes clearing EC3101 a burden.

Meanwhile, I have taken a look at the content for EC4101 and it's good to know that it will be a lot more rigorous in mathematics as compared to EC3101. Fortunately for me (and unfortunately for some), the core electives which are solely micro-based are usually the ones that are more theoretical in nature and less useful in reality (probably with the exception of Labour Economics). Also, since mathematics and statistics are indispensable tools to economic analysis, it is best to avoid qualitative modules as much as possible.

Having said that, my choice of electives for this semester is apparently quite challenging to most people. But really, EC3341 isn't hard as what many people have claimed. However, I was honestly pretty put off by the wordy textbook this module uses which made me regret a little to have taken this module. Even so, I think this module lays a good foundation to higher-level modules in the field of international economics. For those interested in this field, EC3341 is a must-take. On the other hand, I do not advise those who aren't mathematically-inclined AND wish to avoid the risk of screwing up their CAP as much as possible to take EC3314. But knowledge-wise, this module is truly one of the better ones to take.

AY2013-2014 Semester 1 Module Review


EC3101 Microeconomic Analysis II

This module was taken by Prof Mcgee. I personally think the textbook is useless, not to mention its exorbitant price. The lecture notes (which are actually ppt slides from the publisher) are sufficient. But for anyone who's interested, the textbook used is Intermediate Microeconomics by Hal Varian, 8th Edition.

The midterms tested on all the topics covered before Week 7. The median for midterms was 54/100. I scored only 63 as I made countless careless mistakes in the midterms. On top of that, having only 1 hour 45 minutes for 7 questions was pretty insane; most people couldn't finish. In addition, Prof Mcgee likes to use algebra in his questions so it is important to exercise extra caution when writing those complicated expressions. Anyway, you have to go to the general office to collect your midterms.

Finals wasn't cumulative and only topics taught from Week 7 onwards were tested. Having said that, the finals will obviously be more difficult but there is less of a problem in terms of time constraint.

Result: B
For this semester, the emphasis in the finals was on asymmetric information which happened to be my weakest topic, resulting in a mediocre overall grade. On the other hand, the questions on game theory and game applications were rather simple.

The important thing for this module isn't practice but understanding of concepts.


EC3102 Macroeconomic Analysis II

This module was taken by Prof Ho Kong Weng. There were approximately 15 chapters covered in total including IS-LM, AD-AS for closed and open economy. I strongly recommend getting the textbook for this module even though many people commented that the notes were sufficient and that there wasn't time to refer to the textbook anyway. But I self-studied this module all the way so I needed the textbook. Even so, I think the textbook is much better than the notes as the notes is simply a summarized version of the textbook. The textbook used is Macroeconomics by Blanchard and Johnson, 6th Edition.

Midterms: 35%
Finals: 50% (open-book)

Midterms consisted of 4 questions to be done within one hour. Many complained that the time was insufficient. As typical of Prof Ho, he likes to twist the expressions we have learnt in class to test whether you fully understand the concepts. Also, Prof Ho only releases z-score for midterms, 0 being the mean while positive scores mean you are above the average and vice versa. I got 2.0 for the midterms as I screwed up one question on lagrange multiplier. (The question wasn't difficult but it was just because I had no idea how to do lagrange multiplier at all since I took MA1102R in place of EC2104 and instead of self-studying multivariate calculus when I could last summer, I procrastinated.) Typical of Prof Ho, midterm z-scores were uploaded on IVLE.

Finals on the other hand did not seem to test you on your concepts but rather, on your derivation abilities. In fact, I think even if I had not studied, I would still be able to do the paper.

Result: A
I did not do very well for the finals as well because there were many things I did not explain properly due to the lack of time. That was probably the main reason why I ended up with an A.


EC3314 Mathematical Economics

This module was taken by Prof Goenka. There was a total of only 8 or 9 chapters covered. This module is one of those few Level-3000 electives offered in only one semester. In fact, very few FASS students will take this module and majority of the students are from FOS or FOE. On top of that, the total number of people enrolled in this class is only 44 which shows how steep the bell curve can get. Plus, only the last topic covered was new for most FOS students. Lectures aren't really very useful (I skipped lectures from Week 8 onwards though I do watch webcasts for the last two lectures).

Nevertheless, I took this module as I found the content covered to be quite useful and it is the only level 3000 elective that is really mathematical in nature.

The mean for midterms was 35/45 and I scored 40. The 5 marks lost was purely due to carelessness. But the midterms was really easy; there wasn't any proofs or even derivation. All the questions tested on was the ability to apply. I think even the first homework was more difficult than the midterms. Apparently, the midterms had to be collected from the general office but I had no knowledge of that until probably Week 10 or 11 (because I did not attend his lectures and he did not make an announcement on IVLE).

The finals was of course a lot more difficult. In order to score, you had to display a certain level of understanding especially for concepts like upper and lower hemicontinuity, correspondence and the maximum theorem but the Prof did not explain these clearly. I actually thought I screwed up the finals really badly as I could not get the full answer for the dynamic programming question and that my understanding of the above-mentioned concepts was still very shaky. The only question I was really confident of securing full marks was the one on nonlinear programming.

Result: A-
Understand the concepts covered during lectures and tutorials. Practise if possible. Oh by the way, the textbook is Further Mathematics for Economic Analysis by Sydsaeter, Hammond, Seierstad and Strom, 2nd Edition.


EC3341 International Economics I

This module was taken by Dr Lu Yi. He is a very helpful lecturer and will answer your queries promptly. A total of approximately 9 chapters was covered. A lot more emphasis was given to the micro topics of trade. Many had said that Dr Lu's lectures were good as there was additional information given and he would take extra effort to go through the more difficult concepts. However, I did not attend the lectures and self-studied this module based on the notes and textbook which I do agree caused me to lose out a bit on some crucial information as well as assignment marks. But the textbook was probably not really necessary though I still recommend to get it: International Economics Theory and Policy by Krugman, Obstfeld and Melitz, 9th Edition.

There were no tutorials for this module. Basically, students were expected to finish an assignment every week and during the tutorial, the tutor would go through the solutions for the assignment that had been submitted.

Group project was simply comments on two papers that Dr Lu has chosen. There wasn't any word limit.

For finals, there was one macro question while the other three questions were micro. Past-year papers may help in scoring for finals but understanding the concepts well is a lot more crucial.

Result: A
I gave up quite some marks in the assignments plus I think I did not do that well in the finals hence resulting in only an A. Even so, I should think that the bell curve for this module was not really that steep though there were less than 100 people taking this module but many of them were exchange students.


PH1102E Introduction to Philosophy

This module is taken by Prof Pelczar. He is a really enthusiastic prof but maybe philo is just not my thing, so I did not attend his lectures. Readings for this module were actually not very long but even for the longer ones, you would just know which parts to skip based on experience.

For the weekly summaries, students will be expected to summarize the assigned reading. However, it is important to keep in mind what the question is asking exactly. My advice is that for most summaries, do not attempt to source for information outside of the reading unless otherwise stated. There were a few times at the start that I did this in the hope of getting higher score only to end up with a mediocre score. The summaries are bell-curved. I scored only 6/10 for most summaries and 8/10 for a few. There is also one MCQ Quiz (which are PYP questions) to be submitted during Week 7 in place of the summary.

Finals was a 20 MCQ paper. I could check the paper 4 or 5 times even before the first hour ended. Most people will leave after the first hour. However, the questions tend to be tricky so study your lecture notes (not readings or ppt slides) well. That is all you need for the finals. As the prof said himself, only a handful of people out of a cohort size of almost 300 can score 18 and above for the finals which tells you how gentle the bell curve for finals is.

Result: A-
Despite scoring only slightly above average for the summaries, I could still pull up my overall grade to an A-. What I did was to study the lecture notes in detail and with consistency as well as practise the PYP.

Reflections on AY2012-2013 Semester 2

I think "I deserve it" basically sums up this semester. It was unforgivable for me to have slacked off during the second half of the semester when the content was getting increasingly more challenging and that I did not have an intelligence level that was on par with those who can do well without studying much. Yes, so there's actually nothing else I can reflect on; this is probably the biggest downfall for this semester: laziness.

On a side note, the reason why I could do fairly ok for EC2102 was because knowing I had done really badly for the midterms, there was an urgent need to pull up the finals. Maybe that partially led to neglect for other modules as well on top of the lack of interest.

AY2013-2014 Semester 1 Modules

It has been a good long summer break though I'm afraid that this will be the first and last idle summer vacation.

In the coming semester, I'll be taking the following modules:

EC3101 Microeconomic Analysis II
EC3102 Macroeconomic Analysis II
EC3314 Mathematical Economics
EC3341 International Economics I
PH1102E Introduction to Philosophy

I shall be risk-adverse this time round and take only EC modules since I'm clearing both the core modules together at one go and I have to obtain a GPA of 4.0 for both of them in order to do Honours.

As for the electives, it seems that EC3314 is a very unpopular module among EC majors probably because it is quite challenging for a Level-3000 elective. But I have browsed through the content and it doesn't seem to be that difficult. In fact, the content that will be taught in the first half of the semester are mostly familiar topics that have been partially covered in MA1102R and MA1506.

On a side note, PH1102E will also be the last exposure module I have to clear. I look forward to doing so.

AY2012-2013 Semester 2 Module Review


EC2101 Microeconomic Analysis I

This module was taken by Dr Zhang Yang. She is a very enthusiastic lecturer and will reply to student's queries promptly. Also, she can explain concepts very clearly during lectures. I recommend studying the textbook together with the notes. The textbook used for my batch was Microeconomics by Rubinfeld and Pindyck. I think it has changed after my batch.

Weightage
Tutorial attendance and participation: 10%
Homework: 15% (one before and one after midterms, if I remember correctly)
Midterms: 25%
Finals: 50%

The median for the homework was on average only 2 marks away from the full mark, 15. Hence, try and secure close to, if not full marks for both the homework sets.

The midterms consisted of 6 MCQ as well as 2 or 3 structured questions. The MCQ carried a heavy weightage; each question was worth 6 marks. The structured questions were quite easy. The median was around 75/100 and I got 89. Study the notes and textbook well and it'll be easy to get above the average. Midterm scripts will be returned during tutorial.

The emphasis in the finals was on government intervention; taxes and subsidies. This happened to be the chapter I really neglected as it was the very last chapter. To do well for finals, it is really important to know the concepts well.

Result: B 
I really screwed up the finals very badly, hence ending up with only a mediocre grade. The reason was that there were many concepts I was unclear of towards the end of the semester coupled with some careless mistakes.


EC2102 Macroeconomic Analysis I

This module was taken by Prof Ho Kong Weng. There were more chapters covered for this module as compared to EC2101. Personally, the chapter that required the most time was "Dynamic AD-AS". Others are relatively easy especially the ones on IS-LM. I strongly recommend getting the textbook, Macroeconomics by Mankiw. But then again, I self-studied this module all the way so I don't know if there's really a need but I thought the notes weren't very good.

The midterms was a 35 MCQ paper. It tested students mainly on their memory skills. I remember there was an absurd question asking about the year this theory came out or something like that. Prof Ho only releases z-scores for the midterms, 0 being the mean and positive scores indicate you are above the average. As I focused on the applications during my revision, I did very badly for the midterms and scored only -0.6. Midterm z-scores will be uploaded onto IVLE.

Many had complained about the finals being a killer. However, I found the finals easy probably because my concepts were strong. Nevertheless, there were some parts which I did not explain clearly, causing some marks to be lost.

Result: A- 
I am not sure if Prof Ho still sets memory-based midterm papers as for my batch but it is still possible to pull up your grade even with a mediocre score for the 35% component. Finals was slightly more mathematical but it really isn't as hard as many people had described it to be. It is important to remain calm during the exam and recall the concepts learnt in class.


MA1506 Mathematics II

This module was taken jointly by 3 lecturers if I remember correctly, two of them being Prof Leung and Prof Chew. Do not expect too much from the Profs though. In fact, I did not attend the lectures at all. The reason why I took this module was to replace MA1101R as this was a more applied version of linear algebra. But I actually thought the topics covered were more of ODE.

Weightage
Midterms: 20%
Finals: 80%

The average for the midterms was around 6.99/10. As with all PYP format, there were 10 MCQ to be completed within one hour. I screwed up the midterms; I could not formulate the ODE for one physics-based question while I made careless mistakes for two other questions, hence ending up with a mediocre score of 7. Anyway, this is a test that you should know your grade as soon as you step out of MPSH. Otherwise, I think the solutions are uploaded almost immediately.

The finals was not really that difficult but it requires knowledge of Fourier Series from MA1505. As I took MA1102R instead, I had to give up the last question on PDE. I don't really think time was much of a problem but do exercise extra caution when doing the paper.

Result: B+
I ended up with a sub-par grade due to my carelessness in finals as well. I screwed up one question on cantilever as well as another question which I can't remember what it's about. Coupled with my midterm score, B+ was expected. In fact, I only began studying for the finals (and when I say studying, it really means going through the notes for the first time since I did not attend lectures or watch webcasts) from Week 11 or 12 onwards so yes, I deserve it. As with all maths modules, practise consistently.


MA2216/ST2131 Probability

My lecturer was Dr David Chew. His notes were basically a summarized version of the textbook and the format was almost identical as well. But I thought he is a pretty good lecturer even though the concepts may be quite dry towards the end. However, do not be fooled by the simple title of this module. As all maths and stats majors will know, this is one of the killer modules. I do not advise anyone from other faculties to take this module if you are weak in maths.

Midterms: 20%
Online quiz: 10% (done towards the end of the semester)
Finals: 70% (helpsheet allowed)

The midterms was simply a 15 MCQ paper. I did badly for the midterms, again due to carelessness but in all honesty, I couldn't do 2 questions no matter how hard I tried. The mean was 11/15 and I got only 10. The bell curve for midterms was skewed terribly to the right. Solutions to the midterms was uploaded onto IVLE.

The finals was mostly application-based but it also requires some higher-level thinking. The probability questions at the back were a giveaway.

Result: B+
I was really unclear for the last three topics, Joint Distribution, Expectations and Limit Theorems and not only were they the harder topics (probably with the exception of Limit Theorems), but also, I slacked off towards the end of this semester thus ending up with only a B+ for this module. I should think practice actually doesn't help much in scoring for this module. What is important is to understand the concepts that have been taught.


SE1101E Southeast Asia: A Changing Region

This module was taught jointly by two profs, Dr Irving Johnson and Dr Julius Bautista. I absolutely dislike the content covered for this module probably except for the religion part. I thought SEA has more interesting stuff to talk about like politics rather than what was covered for this module. But in terms of workload, this is probably the best module to take to clear the exposure module under the Asian Studies Division for FASS students. Readings weren't heavy but they also weren't helpful in scoring for the finals.

Many students had praised Dr Irving's lectures but I personally thought he wasn't a very good lecturer. Besides wasting too much time cracking jokes only to rush through the lectures towards the end, he isn't very helpful as well; he might seem enthusiastic to many but he doesn't even reply students' queries. Dr Bautista, on the other hand, though boring (as many have described him to be), is a lot more helpful.

The project was to be done in groups of 4 or 5. There were 3 questions to choose from, each on one theme. My group did the easiest one on urbanisation as data was readily available on the net. Another question was on religion and I can't remember what the last one was about. Having substantiated our paper very well, my group got an A for our project.

MCQ quizzes were memory-based but it can also tests students on the movies broadcast during lectures. However, these movies were made available on IVLE so I didn't think there was a need to attend the lectures at all on top of the lectures being close to useless.

If I remember correctly, the finals had 1 compulsory question and we could choose 2 out of 3 questions for the next section. Each question was on one separate theme but there was one question that combined two themes together.

Result: B
I basically screwed the finals up really badly as I was not well-versed in the content taught for this module and couldn't crap enough during the exam. However, I have no advice as to how to study for this module; I think it really boils down to general knowledge but that could just be my biased opinion as you can attempt to read up the recommended books for this module but it can be really time-consuming.

AY2012-2013 Semester 2 Modules

In the coming semester, I'll be taking the following modules:

EC2101 Microeconomic Analysis I
EC2102 Macroeconomic Analysis I
MA1506 Mathematics II
MA2216/ST2131 Probability
SE1101E Southeast Asia: A Changing Region

EC2101 and EC2102 are core modules that I have to clear by this semester in order to satisfy the prerequisites for most Level-3000 modules by the end of Year 1.

I am taking MA1506 in place of MA1101R as I think I won't be able to survive with the abstract concepts and proofs in MA1101R.

MA2216/ST2131 has been maintaining its notorious reputation for being a killer module for maths and stats majors. This module will preclude me from EC2303.

I am absolutely not looking forward to taking SE1101E. In fact, exposure modules from the Asian Studies Division are mostly pretty dry. However, it has already been planned that I should clear one exposure module each semester to rid myself of this heavy burden by Year 2 Semester 1. Hence, I should procrastinate no further.
